If you're looking for a little app you can run to brighten up the screens as you're playing, I use this little baby: It's called Gamma Panel (gapa.exe) www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1296Try it, it doesn't change any registry settings and there's no adware/trojans, etc. If you don't like it, just delete it!

Here is a full description of the app/utility:
Gamma Panel is a little & handy application that lets you adjust brightness, contrast and gamma settings in real-time. Thanks to its hot-key feature, you don't even have to leave the game you're playing! The program works pretty similar to Color profiles in PowerStrip but is completely free and much smaller in terms of system load and memory usage.
The program is pretty simple - it just sits on the taskbar and does its job. You can apply profiles in 2 ways: by pressing assigned hot-key combination or by selecting the entry from the popup menu. The last selected color profile is automatically applied on the next program run.
The profiles can be added, modified or removed in the main window.
The controls are pretty self-explanatory. LUT is the maximum possible number of different colors that can be reproduced. The largest number is 16,777,216 so you can see the loss in color resolution when applying any correction.
Note: Pressing Esc key resets the display controls to their default position - it might be very useful if you set the brightness too high or too low and you don't see anything.
All the settings and profiles are stored in gapa.ini file so you don't need to have administrator rights to run or install the program (it doesn't write anything to the registry). The .ini file is saved in the current working directory so you can use as many configuration files as you wish. Just change the working directory in the shortcut and the program will read and write its settings to a different file.
The program has been tested and found to be working without any problems with: - Microsoft Windows 98SE - Microsoft Windows XP
It uses only standard Win32-API calls so it should work well with any other version of Windows.

I don't like it, I'm a fan of having dark corners to hide in. How on earth do you guys expect me to get my mandatory shovel kills in if you ladies can see me in the dark!!! ;D

It was a real problem for me with my flatscreen, though. I had my stuff jacked as high as it would go, and it would still be really dark.

As I mention, I use this little app/utility.
In recent years, previous to the advent of these flatscreens, the monitors had knobs on them to adjust the brightness and contrast, so all I had to do is make the adjustment on the knobs to my liking and go about my business.
Now I have an eMachine computer which I bought a year ago the past Christmas. It came with a 17" flatscreen monitor (less those knobs I previously described). The computer has integrated graphics (ATI Radeon Express 200). Of course, ATI has a control panel whereas I can make the same adjustments to brightness and contrast, etc. via software. But, it's a bit cumbersome to wade through the various menu options and selections.
As I previously said, I use this new app/utility. All I do is call it up, press F2 and I'm done. Easy, less eye strain, and fewer menu options to acquire the settings I desire.
I love it, and it's free!! I've been using it for about a year now.
And to profbuldge, let me say that despite what the program does, there are still dark areas in maps where it's still very difficult to see a person hiding in it. I still get killed because people are lying down in the dark in a particular part of the sewer. If it weren't for the icon above teammate's heads, sometimes I would've missed them as well. So, for you there are still areas that offer some safety for you... ...if you know which ones they are!!!! lol.
