My mic is working fine when I test it in the Windows Control Panel.
It doesn't do squat in the Steam options/voice section or in game.
Suggestions?

nope..didn't work either. It was already set there.
Seems like a file in the game is hosed or something.

This continues to baffle me.
If I test my mic in the steam "settings" area...it sounds great.
But if I'm logged onto the server and test it in "options" or I'm in game...it does not work!
ideas?

A little late, but I did notice that you still don't have your mic running well. I recently had problems with my mic, worked well in windows, steam settings but not in play. Here is what I did:
(Take note that my mic is USB)
-Close steam completely -I plug my mic in one of my back USB port -I deleted my autoconfig.cfg file(you can make a copy first or just cut it somewhere else) -Reboot and restart steam in the console type in "voice_loopback 0"(maybe "voice_loopback" is not necessary but it work for me) -and that is it!!!! I hope this helps.
